First Skiing of the Year

11/30/2008

I’m an avid skier and recreational racer.  Until a couple of years ago I was addicted.  Well I made a comeback to skiing about 10 years ago after an 18 year hiatus.  They say that last year was one of the best years for skiing in the northeast–ever!  I only skied eight times last winter.  Wichada and I had just returned from a month in Thailand.  I was tired and I was distracted by rowing my Concept2 rowing machine.

My friend Steve got a bionic knee this spring.  The guy is 65 and has been living with the most horrendously dysfunctional knee for decades.  His first day skiing with his new knee was yesterday and he announced that it was a success.  I was more excited about seeing him ski with his new knee than I was about actually skiing.  Today was the earliest I’ve been skiing for years.  And I was so happy to see Steve skiing pain free and uncompromised by any un-cooperative body part!

The skiing itself was very good for the third day after opening this year.  Best of all there was only a vestage of a lift line.  My enjoyment was somewhat dampened by pain in the middle of my back, a muscle abused by too much rowing that periodically started spasming.  I tried to help it out by standing up a bit straighter than my normal ski posture.  It must have helped because my sixth and seventh runs were almost pain free.

I hope to ski at least three times as many times this winter.  I’ve skied up to 70 times in previous winters.
