I just installed ScribeFire, a firefox tool that give you an interface to edit blogs. Hopefully it will make it easy enough so that I start to publish to my blog more regularly.
I’m very interested in using XAMPP and WordPress to create my own blog. It was mentioned on the dyndns ( https://www.dyndns.com ) website.
Well, I notice that my last entry in May mentions that I had just installed ScribeFire! I have re-installed my OS at work several times since that time as well as re-installing ScribeFire but never using it.
The reason that I re-installed my OS so many times is that I was experimenting with Windows Server 2008, using it as a desktop. The performance was pretty good and it was an interesting experiment, but I finally decided that it was more trouble than it was worth. There were really three reasons why I came to this conclusion; the first is that it is, of course, server software and I was frustrated because I was unable to install one or two programs because they won’t run on a server OS. The second reason is that network performance was really poor. The third reason is that I had installed the 64bit version and ran into problems with printer drivers. After that experience I was so fed up that immediately installed Windows XP, thinking that I had had enough of the whole Windows Vista family. About a week ago I realized that I was missing some of Vista’s features so I decided to install Vista, once again. But this time my RAM was beefed up from 1.5GB to 4GB. I think that the extra RAM has really made a big difference in performance!
It was not long after installing Vista that I read a few articles about the advantages of a 64 bit OS…and you guessed it! I started all over again and installed 64 bit Vista. I had thought that the only advantage of a 64bit OS is the ability to use more than 4GB of RAM. But according to what I have read, a 64 bit OS makes switching between paged applications much quicker. This was mentioned in the context of running a game along with other applications.
I’m not ready to say that I’ve noticed the 64 bit edition having better performance in any situation that I’ve noticed. I did finally get the front office printers working on my computer though. It seems that you can’t install 64 bit print drivers on a 32 bit OS, so I was unable to install those on Tyro and install the queue on my workstation. I finally just installed the Canon and Lexmark drivers on my desktop, though, and that works fine. I also installed the driver on tyro2 which has server 2008 64 bit installed. Although I was able to install that queue on my workstation, it doesn’t seem to work!
