Hahnweide Challenge 2011–Day 2

Amazingly, I placed second again!  If I hadn’t made a couple of dumb mistakes, I probably would be in first.  As I was headed for the start line I noticed that I had the wrong task loaded in SeeYou and instead of concentrating on the start I tried to load the correct one which lead to some wasteful course and altitude departures.  I probably lost a few more seconds later in the race when I had to answer the phone.  The winner was only 15 seconds faster than I was.

The lift was about the same as in the first race and, once again, I set MC 1 and then increased to 1.2 when things started to look good.  There was a moment of doubt on the penultimate leg when I was getting quite low, found no lift in one thermal and had to veer about 20 degrees or more off course to try another thermal.  I was afraid I was getting low enough to be beneath the thermal but I was lucky and found good lift.  I might have saved a little time by not climbing quite as high as I did.  I followed the rule to set my MC to the current rate of lift but wonder if it would have been better to leave a little earlier.

  1. Thanks for the description of the AAT. So if you have a great lift day and can really fly fast, would you try to fly past the turnpoints as if to extend the task let line? What if you fly past the turnpoint so far that you leave that turnpoints area? Captain Wood
